Godzilla Vs Marvel (Again)

Godzilla will take on the Marvel Universe across different eras

Marvel Comics is welcoming back the King of the Monsters to the Marvel Universe in 2025. A series of one-shot stories will show Godzilla crossing paths with different Marvel characters—including Fantastic Four, Hulk, Spider-Man, X-Men, Avengers, and Thor! (Details about each individual issue below.)

These standalone issues are each set during Marvel stories from different time periods. (You’ll see what I mean below.) The whole comics event will be collected as Godzilla vs. the Marvel Universe (2025) (affiliate link).

Of course, this is actually the second time that Godzilla tromped across the Marvel Universe. The comic book company recently celebrated its 1977-1979 comic book series Godzilla, King of the Monsters by writer Doug Moench and artist Herb Trimpe.

A brand-new omnibus edition (affiliate link) features the 24 issues originally published more than 40 years ago, showing agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. following Godzilla walking around the Marvel universe. Also involved in that 1970s series were Fantastic Four, The Avengers, Devil Dinosaur, and The Champions.

The idea of the new comics began when Marvel and Toho were talking about reprinting the 1977 comics. Marvel editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski says the publisher talked for years with Godzilla owner Toho about a new crossover.

“We approached them initially for our reprints, but a while after those conversations, it was clear that both of our teams were excited to do more together. We hope this will be a sign for more exciting projects to come.”

Find out more details about the six comics during event (plus quotes from the creators) below!

A look at the Godzilla Vs Marvel event—six more times!

Godzilla vs Fantastic Four (set during the Silver Age)

The six-issue event Godzilla vs. Marvel begins with Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four, which shows Marvel’s first family dealing with Galactus and his newest herald—King Ghidorah. The story is written by Ryan North, with art by John Romita Jr. (Plus variant covers from other artists.)

Bleeding Cool reports that the Fantastic Four issue will be set during the “kinda-sixties” like the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. Hollywood Reporter says this new issue will also see Godzilla partner with the Silver Surfer to save the world.

“Sometimes the job of a comic writer is hard, and you're stuck trying to come up with a story and some characters that really sing,” North told the official Godzilla website. “And sometimes you have all you need right there in the premise, and it lands in your email with a little ‘ding’.”

According to North, when editor Mark Paniccia asked whether the writer had any interest in Godzilla meeting the Fantastic Four, North has never replied YES to an email so quickly. “For me, my two favorite Godzilla movies are the first one in 1954—a stone-cold classic—and Godzilla Minus One, which to me really made Godzilla feel like this animal, this force of nature. For this comic, it’s a period piece, so it’s based 100-percent on Godzilla as it was/is at the end of the 1954 movie.”

Godzilla vs. Hulk (set during Hulk stories from the 1970s)

Hitting shelves and e-readers April 16, Godzilla vs. Hulk finds General Ross with no tolerance for monsters in any form. With the Thunderbolts, his anti-kaiju taskforce, he’s taken down or imprisoned the biggest and baddest monsters on the planet: Fin Fang Foom, Mothra, Kumonga, even the Hulk.

Now all that’s left is his biggest hunt of all... GODZILLA. But the Thunderbolts’ efforts to bring their last monster to heel may just result in the most destructive battle royale to ever rock the earth. It’s time to figure out who’s really the strongest there is!

Godzilla vs. Hulk is written by Gerry Duggan, with art and cover by Giuseppe Camuncoli. (Plus variant covers by other artists.)

“I grew up loving Godzilla movies and Marvel Comics,” Duggan told ComicBook.com. “And it’s a thrill to be able to collaborate with Giuseppe Camuncoli on the absolute craziest comic I think I’ve ever been a part of, and I worked on over a hundred issues of DEADPOOL (2012) and once wrote a comic about Conan killing a zombie with a call girl’s leg.”

With the issue set during the 1970s era of the Godzilla series and Marvel Comics, artist Camuncoli told the Godzilla site that he deliberately drew the version of Godzilla that appears in most of the movies during the 1970s.

Godzilla vs Spider-Man (from the ’80s Black suit era)

Coming out April 30, the crossover Godzilla vs. Spider-Man takes place during a particular era in the Spider-Man saga. Following the massive events in the original Secret Wars (the version that came out in 1984), Peter Parker—A.K.A. the Amazing Spider-Man—returns to Earth with a spiffy new (alien) costume.

He doesn’t have a care in the world! Well, except for that complicated love triangle with MJ and Black Cat. And unbelievable pressure at the Daily Bugle. Rent. Bills Supervillains.

Oh—and GODZILLA IS IN NEW YORK CITY with all its destructive power aimed squarely at the wall-crawler! Don’t miss the two most popular characters in pop culture history absolutely going at it in this kaiju-sized slugfest for the ages!

Godzilla vs. Spider-Man is written by Joe Kelly, with art and cover by Nick Bradshaw. (Plus variant covers from other artists.)

“The second I heard that there was going to be a Godzilla x Spidey crossover set in the ‘80s, I almost leapt across the table to claim it,” Kelly told IGN. “This book is a chance to go nuts and have a blast with two iconic characters and channel the chaos of the time period that I was actively collecting Spider-Man.”

Godzilla vs X-Men (set during X-Men comics from the ’90s)

Coming out May 14, Godzilla vs. X-Men takes place during the X-Men’s comics stories from the 1990s. When a robotics firm draws a kaiju’s anger, the X-Men are called in to protect a world that hates and fears them from the counterattack of—GODZILLA!

But what are the reasons for Godzilla’s attacks? And are the X-Men on the right side? Follow the X-Men as they take on THE KING OF MONSTERS before humanity sends forth the Sentinels to finish the job!

Godzilla vs. X-Men will be written by one of 1990s X-Men’s key creators, Fabian Nicieza, known for his influential runs of X-Men (1986) and X-Force (1991). The issue includes art by acclaimed artist Emilio Laiso. (Plus, of course, variant covers from other artists.)

In this special issue, Nicieza returns to a time when everyone wanted a piece of Marvel’s merry mutants—even Godzilla!

“If you’d asked 10-year-old Fabian what he'd do for the chance to write Godzilla, he would have breathed fire and burned anyone up for the job to an uncomfortable crisp,” Nicieza says. “Combine Godzilla with a ‘vs.’ and an ‘X-Men,’ well, let’s just say I love the smell of burning writer in the morning. It smells like victory!”

Godzilla vs. Avengers (set during their 2000s stories)

Coming out June 18, Godzilla vs. Avengers finds the New Avengers lineup returning to face an unstoppable enemy—GODZILLA! In the aftermath of a massive battle between Godzilla, Fin Fang Foom, the Avengers and Jet Jaguar, S.H.I.E.L.D. tries to make sense of what went down—but everyone's telling a different story!

What really happened during that fateful clash? Find out when Earth's Mightiest Heroes take on Earth’s Mightiest Kaiju!

The special issue Godzilla vs. Avengers is written by David F. Walker, with art from Georges Jeanty. (With various covers from other artists.)

“As a child, I was raised on Godzilla movies,” Walker says. “And as an adult, the New Avengers was a beautiful reminder of why I love comics. The lineup of iconic characters in the New Avengers (2004) was a beautiful mix of quirky personalities and big adventures that kept me coming back every month. Bringing Godzilla and the New Avengers together for an epic showdown has allowed me to work with characters I have loved for a long time, in a way that I hope is as entertaining for fans to read as it was for me to write.”

Jeanty shared, “There are few things in life that feel better then when you get to recreate your childhood passions as a ‘serious’ adult. Drawing this one-shot allowed me to package two things I loved in my youth—Godzilla and the Avengers—and put it in a comic book! It has been a joy drawing these pages. I hope everyone who picks up this book will see all the love that went into to it.”

Godzilla vs. Thor

The Marvel vs Godzilla wraps up July 2 with Godzilla vs. Thor. The King of the Monsters marches toward the Golden Realm to face off against perhaps the only Marvel hero who can truly take him on singlehandedly—The Mighty Thor!

The deadly group of assassins known as The Hand have bestowed Godzilla with the power of The Beast! KRA-KOOM!!! The Mighty Thor must defend Midgard from Godzilla — but at what cost?!

Acclaimed Thor writer Jason Aaron makes his triumphant return to Asgard for a battle that will shake the heavens with roaring thunder! The one-shot features art and the official cover from Aaron Kuder. (Plus variant covers from guest artists.)

“There are almost as many toy kaiju in my office as there are Mjolnirs—which is really saying something,” Aaron shared with Marvel.com. “So it made sense for me to bring two of my favorite characters together for one titanic clash. Aaron Kuder and I are using the Godzilla from Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, one of the most brutal and powerful versions of the King of the Monsters, so expect a colossal battle that I think will rival some of the most epic, cosmic throwdowns I've ever written with the God of Thunder.”

The world of Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics has a history that goes all the way back to the 1939 publication of Marvel Comics #1. Although the company’s name at that time was Timely Comics, that issue featured the debut of Namor the Sub-Mariner and the original version of the Human Torch.

After a number of years (and more than one company name change), what we now call the Marvel Universe launched in 1961 with Fantastic Four #1. Within just a few months, the Marvel brand exploded under the creativity of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and more.

Over the years since, Marvel’s brand has grown to include movies, TV, games, and more. The list of Marvel characters also includes Spider-Man, the Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Scarlet Witch, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Wolverine, Hulk, Storm, Daredevil, Captain Marvel, Deadpool, and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Godzilla Vs DC (Again)

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 coming summer 2025

DC Comics got a visit from Godzilla (as well as Kong and more monsters) in the 2023 comic book mini-series Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong by writer Brian Buccellato and artist Christian Duce. That event found the monsters meeting up with the likes of Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Supergirl, Green Lantern, and Batman.

“As a comics fan, there’s nothing more fun and exciting than exploring those amazing What If situations that come up when fandoms cross streams,” said DC’s Jim Lee when we reported on the first Godzilla and Kong / Justice League crossover. “In this case, it’s a matchup of the world’s greatest superheroes in the Justice League who take on not only the King of the Monsters—Godzilla—but the mighty Kong himself! It’s a crossover, no-holds-barred battle, decades in the making, and no bona fide comics fan will want to miss it!”

Like the first edition, Justice League Vs Godzilla Vs Kong 2 reunites the creative team of Brian Buccellato and Christian Duce. The first issue of the sequel becomes available June 4, continuing the battle between DC super heroes and the Legendary Comics’ Monsterverse.

In the aftermath of last year’s Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong, Task Force X launches a plan to develop hybrid Titans that Amanda Waller can control to guard against future Titan attacks on our Earth. To stop Task Force X, the Justice League travels to Legendary Earth and must face the dangers of the Hollow Earth, Kong, and Godzilla, King of the Monsters!

This Titan-size threat will require a Titan-size response, and the Justice League will fight fire with fire, as readers will see “titanized” versions of DC super heroes and super-villains facing off against Kong, Godzilla, and other Legendary monsters.

DC promises appearances from King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra. They also say that Batman supervillain Killer Croc will transform into a kaiju!

The series will also feature the comic book return of Col. Lee Shaw, who first appeared in the 2014 graphic novel Godzilla: Awakening.

“It’s such a thrill to tear open both the DC Universe and Legendary’s Monsterverse for this dream project,” writer Brian Buccellato said when he was promoting the first DC vs Godzilla event. “I get to build something way larger-than-life using all the toys in two different sandboxes.”

Buccellato also said then that artist Christian Duce was an ideal partner in the project: “Christian has been masterful in his navigating the story’s enormous scope in terms of character moments, rampaging monsters, and big superhero action.”

The world of DC Comics

DC Comics launched in the 1930s as National Allied Publications. In 1935, they made media history by publishing New Fun, the first comic book filled with new material instead of just reprints. Over the years, the company became known as “DC,” renamed after Detective Comics.

In 1938, DC made comics history again when they introduced Superman in Action Comics #1. He turned out so popular that Superman is credited with inspiring the “costumed superhero genre.”

Over the years, DC’s list of popular media characters has also grown to include Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Green Lantern, Flash, Vixen, Aquaman, Spectre, Phantom Stranger, Swamp Thing, Black Lightning, Justice League, Teen Titans, Suicide Squad, and more.
