In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe.

When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.

The film stars Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Samuel L. Jackson, Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon. Nia DaCosta directs. The screenplay is by Megan McDonnell, Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells.

How Loki advised the baddie before she got to The Marvels

The baddie in The Marvels, played by Zawe Ashton, is a Kree leader fighting to restore her home after a long civil war. Ashton, by the way, is engaged to actor Tom Hiddleston—who has appeared in several Marvel projects as the mischievous god Loki.

Before she got to set, Hiddleston gave Ashton advice about joining The Marvels. Talking with Entertainment Weekly, Ashton shared that her conversations with Hiddleston involved his experiences in the franchise:

“One of the main takeaways from our conversations was, what you put into Marvel, you get back. If you go into this with an open heart and a great work ethic and just want to provide an amazing experience for the fans, you’ll have an amazing experience on those sets.”

Ashton said that his comments really empowered her. He also gave her this important advice:

Make sure you have enough zippers to go to the bathroom in your costume. Which is very good advice, I realize now.”

For The Marvels, Ashton trained for weeks for the action scenes. In the movie, she confronts Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Ms. Marvel.

“It’s this all-female sci-fi extravaganza, with a woman on the other side of the camera. I felt very moved, actually, being involved in it. It’s not an environment you’re often in—a huge-budget movie with all these badass women and Samuel L. Jackson. That just doesn’t happen.”
