SNL: Mephistopheles and Andrew Dice Clay - It’s a Wonderful Life (Jon Lovitz)
A shock comic wishes he were never born—and his guardian devil grants his wish.
Controversial comedian Andrew Dice Clay was named the host of the May 12, 1990 episode of Saturday Night Live, which came with a whirlwind of media coverage—fueled by the twin announcements that cast member Nora Dunn and musical guest Sinead O’Conner were boycotting the show that week.
That night, the show led off with a cold open that leaned into the uproar: The host, apparently distraught over the havoc his appearance had caused, prepares to jump off a bridge to his death. In a scene mimicking It’s a Wonderful Life, his “guardian devil” Mephistopheles (played by Jon Lovitz) shows him how the world would have changed if Clay had never been born…
During his time as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, Jon Lovitz played Mephistopheles several times. A cast member on SNL from 1985 to 1990, Lovitz was nominated for an Emmy Award his first two years on the show. Besides Mephistopheles, his other SNL characters included The Master Thespian, Hanukkah Harry, Annoying Man, and Tommy Flanagan, The Pathological Liar, who would punctuate his punctuate his labored falsehoods with the catchphrase, "Yeah! That's the ticket!" Following SNL, he starred in The Critic, was a member of the ensemble on News Radio, and has appeared in numerous other television series and films, including 20 episodes of The Simpsons.
