Who Are The Munsters?
The original 1964-66 CBS sitcom The Munsters presented the home life of a family of friendly monsters. Fred Gwynne starred as Herman Munster, patterned after Frankenstein’s monster; Yvonne De Carlo as Lily Munster, his vampire wife; Al Lewis as Grandpa, an aging Dracula always talking about the “good old days”; Beverley Owen (later replaced by Pat Priest) as their teen niece Marilyn Munster, whose all-American beauty made her the family outcast; and Butch Patrick as Eddie Munster, Herman’s and Lily’s werewolf son.
Produced by the creators of Leave It to Beaver, the series satirized both traditional monster movies and the wholesome family TV shows of the era. After seventy episodes over two seasons, the show was cancelled because it lost ratings against ABC’s Batman. Following cancellation, The Munsters found new life in syndication.
Thanks to its continuing popularity, the characters have been revived (heh) a number of times, including a spin-off series and a few movies. In 2017, it was announced that Seth Meyers is developing a modern-day interpretation. (No further details at this time.)
