Confirmed: Sam Raimi on ‘Doctor Strange 2’

When Scott Derrickson dropped out as director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, fans were nervous. That is, until there was talk that maybe his replacement would be Sam Raimi, who seemed uniquely qualified because his resume as a director includes horror, horror comedies, and big-budget comic book movies. Even Derrickson liked the idea of Raimi taking over on the film. However, for a while it was just talk.

This week, while Raimi was making the rounds to promote his new Quibi streaming series, he off-handedly shared with ComingSoon.net about the weird coincidence that there was a Doctor Strange joke in Spider-Man 2, and here is now making a Doctor Strange movie.

I loved Doctor Strange as a kid…but when we had that moment in Spider-Man 2, I had no idea that we would ever be making a Doctor Strange movie. So it was really funny to me that coincidentally that line was in the movie. I gotta say I wish we had the foresight to know that I was going to be involved in the project.

There aren’t many details right now about Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It promises to be scarier than your average Marvel film, and it’s been said that events from Scarlet Witch’s Disney+ series WandaVision (and also possibly Loki’s Disney+ series) would lead up to the Doctor Strange film. The film also may include Brother Voodoo and Clea, plus the return of Mordo.

In this video, Emergency Awesome’s Charlie Schneider outlines why Raimi is a solid choice for directing the next Doctor Strange movie. The horror movie-esque clip he shares from Spider-Man 2 clinches it:
